Tobey Maguire had to get fat for Spiderman 3
Tobey Maguire was required by the producers of Spiderman 3 to gain weight. Tobey experienced substantial physical and moral problems while gaining weight so an army of specialists has been engaged to help him through this process and a lot of his shots have also been retouched to make him look more plump.
The reason for this high-fat direction of the Spiderman aesthetics was to make the audience feel better about themselves. Psychologists hired by the studio have researched the public and concluded that well developed male and female bodies do not make people feel good anymore.
“Audience can not connect anymore to the heroes. They look too good and people that watch movies feel they can not be like that. Before they were able to work out, they had time and interest. Nowadays people work too much and also eat much more food so it is much harder to be fit. So it is basically something they can not achieve and it frustrates them and makes them feel depressed. And people do not want to see movies that depress them. Movies should relax them. So we advised the studio to make Peter Parker a bit more fatter in this sequel. Also hopefully he will gain even more and more weight as the series progresses which will follow the trends of the audience.” said the chief of Psychology and Propaganda at Sony Studios.
Tobey Maguire worked with several Hollywood consultants including Ken Davitian and the ex-cook of Marlon Brando.
“I am happy to change my physical appearance to suit the role and make the audience’ experience a more pleasant one. Also it was a challenge for me and I was happy to take it on. I was inspired by metamorphosis by Robert De Niro in Raging Bull and Marlon Brando in The Island of Dr. Moreau. I do not know if this will win me an Oscar but I am sure people will appreciate my effort.”
